Burn a Feed Using MT-FeedBurner

To Burn a Feed using MT-FeedBurner simply visit the template listing of your blog. At the bottom of the listing, you will see a section labeled application actions, and below this an option that will allow you to Burn a Feed. Click the link to begin.

The first step in the process is to select the source feed. You will see a list of the feeds available in this blog, provided in a drop-down list. Select one from the list and click connect.

After you select a source feed, you must sign into your FeedBurner account (you did remember to set up your account first, right?) in order to retrieve a list of existing target feeds.

Once signed into your FeedBurner account, a list of existing feeds is presented to you and you can select one of them as your target feed. At this point, you can also choose to create a new feed, and select that as the target for your feed.

If you have selected to create a new feed, then you will be prompted with fields that allow you to name your new feed, and to supply the address for that feed at FeedBurner. Two things are important to remember about this feed.

The first is that the name must be unique across all FeedBurner feeds. The second is that the adddress should not have any spaces in it. So if you have spaces, you should replace them with underscores (_) or hyphens (-) or simply remove the spaces entirely.

After choosing the source, and mapping to a target, you are prompted to redirect your feed. Many Movable Type installations are found on Unix and Unix-like (Linux, BSD) systems that support .htaccess and mod_rewrite, and these systems will support automatically forwarding your existing feed to the new FeedBurner location.

Some of these systems, and other systems, such as Windows, will not. If you have any doubt or question whatsoever about whether or not your system supports this function, leave the box unchecked and continue. It may cause unpredictable results on unsupported systems.

Just to be clear, in many cases, it may be best to leave this unchecked and do the redirection step manually. FeedBurner has a good post on the subject. If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, ask for help from someone who is.

Once you are past the redirect screen, you are presented with a simple completion screen that lets you know that things are done, and at this point, you're all set. The mapping of your feed is completed. Click the Close button to exit the window, and enjoy your new connection to FeedBurner!
