Fixed problem with encryption of approval beacon.
Updated templates to make compatible with MT 4.2x.

This version is compatible/needed/tested only with MT 4.2x. Users of MT 3.3x should not upgrade. After installing this upgrade, rebuild all templates that include the Approval Beacon to rebuild the beacon properly. If you don't use the beacon, or don't use MT 4.2x, this upgrade is not necessary.

Completely proofed all code and templates (long overdue!), including...
Added option to send all comments from blog.
Moved comment and entry into separate templates.
Moved constants into appropriate data files.
Moved settings templates to template files.
Removed all extraneous settings and routines.
Removed mt-notifier.cgi, no longer needed.
Replaced with mt-notifier-queue.cgi for sending queue.
Updated call to app->component with Notifier->instance.
Updated call to app->instance with Notifier->instance.
Updated MT-Notifier functions with MT functions where possible.
Updated templates with changes for MT 4.21.

Movable Type 4.2 and MT-Notifier

With the recent release of Movable Type, it has come to my attention that some of you may receive extra notifications sent if you have users subscribed to receive notifications when new entries are added to your blog. This appears to be due to something in the upgrade process, as near as I can tell, saving entries during the upgrade, which triggers a save through MT-Notifier, thinking that it might have something new to send.

If you want to avoid new notifications being sent out, and you are a registered user of MT-Notifier version four, drop me a line prior to upgrading. There is a version of MT-Notifier that I have which will allow you to create history records for all of your subscribers, effectively marking all of your existing subscribers as if they have already been notified of all entries on your system. A bit of a hack, really, but it should work to alleviate this problem.

Gigi Photography Blog on TypePad

After the success of the Allison Rodgers Photography Blog on TypePad, I really didn't know what to expect. As luck would have it, that success continued. To begin with, the ARP blog has been featured on the TypePad homepage (I linked to the ARP story there, just in case TypePad decided to rotate their images). After that, however, I had a number of requests from people on TypePad. It's really amazing that there are so many photography-focused blogs on TypePad. I never would have imagined!

In any case, though I've had quite a few requests, a number of them are still in the investigation or planning stages, but one of them has actually rolled out some changes: The Gigi Photography Blog. Gillian - Gigi herself - contacted me about making some changes similar to those made at ARP. Namely, she liked the drop-down menus that we had put into place, as well as updating the sidebars to make some more room for her photo content and we even included the comments right on the home page and the other entry listing pages (the monthly archives, since she doesn't have categories on her blog).

To do this, we needed to upgrade her account to the pro level, since the advanced templates aren't available to any of the lesser accounts. Luckily, TypePad makes this a really painless process. Painless for everything but the checkbook, that is (and even there it's not too bad - costing just a bit more over a plus account. Just visit the account info tab on the control panel and follow the upgrade/downgrade steps. Within a few minutes, you'll be all set!

After we had the ability to make the changes to an advanced template set, implementing the changes was a breeze, and it means that Gillian can continue to blog about her adventures in photography, just as she always has - something that was of paramount importance. MT-Notifier Category Subscription Testers Needed

I have a thought on how to fix the category issue with MT-Notifier (where you have to save it in unpublished mode with categories, then publish it before saving in published mode). But I need a couple people who can check it out. You're welcome to try it if you have a lot of subscribers, but it's probably best if you don't have too many, just in case. Nothing should break, but I'm curious if we can get it to work without having to worry about if you have to save in unpublished mode first. Let me know if you're interested.

Search Engine Guide Updated to MT 4.1, New Look

One of our clients, Search Engine Guide, has just completed an upgrade to Movable Type version 4.1. They are using the commercial version of the product, which includes custom fields, and the upgrade went smoothly, migrating data from the beta version of the plugin that was used previously.

The upgrade also included collapsing a number of blogs into two for easier maintenance going forward, and updating the look of all of the pages on the site, which included more than 10,000 entries! While we were in the system, we took more than fifty index templates and turned them into pages and rolled out a new look and feel for the site, bringing a whole new feel to your favorite search engine resource. Check it out!

Unfortunately, we can't take credit for the design work - that was done by Tyler Jones from Out Loud Creative. Great job, Tyler!

Are You Ready for Open Source Movable Type?

Perhaps more importantly, is Movable Type ready for Open Source? The answer, alas, is no. Not quite. There has been a huge amount of headway made, to be sure. It's come a long way. There are nightly builds that you can download of the Open Source product. There are bunches of new features, even from the MT 4.01 release, which itself made nice strides from MT 4.0. But unfortunately, MTOS isn't quite ready for prime time.

There are two main reasons for this.

The first is that you can't upgrade existing content. If you're interested in starting a new site, then by all means go for it. But if you've been slowly building content for a few years, then you're going to be stuck with a message that reads something like Error during upgrade: failed to execute statement ALTER TABLE mt_entry ADD entry_HASH(0x8d889b4). That's not good. I've tried this on both nightly builds that have been released and the commercial beta, with 3.35 and 4.01. Nada. So if you're waiting for the announcement to move forward, keep waiting.

For the second reason, you have to look at what you want to do. If one of those things is adding custom fields to your blog, you're again out of luck. RightFields hasn't yet been updated for MT4, an there is probably an above-average chance that it won't be, because Six Apart has now acquired Custom Fields. Unfortunately, the plugin has become an addon and it's only going to be available in the commercial version. That's right, no love if you are Open Source. While you can start a new site with Custom Fields (apparently), you also can't upgrade your old content at this point, so it's a bit less than useful right now. Maybe a new RightFields will be available for the Open Source folks. We'll have to see.

While the release is feeling a lot more solid than both MT 4.0 and 4.01, it's still not quite done. To be fair, it is not even a release candidate - the nightlies are just nightly builds and the beta is just the first in what will probably be a string of them. And it's a good move. But it's not like Movable Type has suddenly become a viable option for everyone. It is Open Source, and that's a good move. But it's not across the finish line yet - there are a lot of people waiting for some blanks to be filled in before they upgrade from MT3.

Update: The most recent nightly build (r1116) fixed the upgrade issue, so if you were waiting on that, you're good to go. However, if you want to upgrade your Custom Fields content, you're still apparently out of luck. There might be some news on the horizon for RightFields users, however. Stay tuned.

Sphere Plugin Also Getting Some Publicity

Another recent plugin that came out of the Everitz Labs - hey, that sounds important, I might have to start using it - allows you to easily add Sphere Related Content to your Movable Type-powered blog.

This one is supported by the fine folks at Sphere, and they provide a great experience, allowing you to easily link to other sites that are talking about similar topics, right from your own page, enhancing the user experience. You can find it in the plugin directory.

Check it out, and let us know if we can help you with integrating anything on your site - or even help develop a plugin for your needs!

Fliqz Video Uploader for MT4 Getting Noticed

I'm not entirely sure why it has suddenly become news, but for whatever reason, there is a bit of buzz surrounding the Fliqz Movable Type plugin. You may remember the announcement for this plugin, exactly three months ago, announcing the involvement with the development.

Well, at least two press releases came out today announcing the service, so even though they are a bit late to the game, it's better late than never!

Fashion-Incubator Reviewed by Problogger Community

One of my clients, Fashion-Incubator, recently popped up over at Problogger, as the subject of the Community Blog Consulting Project.

Now you may wonder if this is good or bad, and frankly it is an excellent question, but make sure that you don't miss the point. Simply asking one person's point of view is rarely a good idea. Taking part in the Community Blog Consulting Project seems like a great idea for Kathleen (the site's owner), as at the very least it brings a huge amount of traffic to her site.

Beyond that, she gets a lot of input on the site and what will make it really pop, which is rarely to be had for such a great price. I think that Darren has hit on a great idea here, and I look forward to helping Kathleen implement the ideas from the project, and I'm really happy that she's the lucky site chosen or this round. Way to go, Kathleen, I'll be watching the project with interest!
